This command cuts right through an exiting object using a selected face or cutting plane to determine the plane of the cut. A new face is created to span what would otherwise be a hole in the cut object. The shiny side of the face used to cut the object determines which part of the object is removed. If the results are not what you expected, use the Undo command and then use the Reverse Face command to change the facing of the face used to cut the object.
The illustration shows a soccer ball cut by a plane parallel to the groundplane grid.
The face covering the cut surface will work correctly only for convex objects. In objects like the torus, that have inward facing surfaces, or objects with concave faces, the cut face may not cover the hole perfectly. In this case, delete the imperfect covering face and replace it with one or more faces created manually.
