_bm3    Special Cursors

In addition to the normal mouse pointer, the 3D View has five other mouse cursors that signal special modes of operation.  These are selected using commands in the Edit Menu, or with buttons in the Select Toolbar, as follows :-

_bm33

Normal Mode   Normal Mode is indicated by the classic Windows arrow cursor.  In Normal Mode you use the left mouse button to pan the 3D view and to select vertices, edges, faces, etc.  Use the right mouse button to rotate the 3D View, and to display the context menus.  The scroll wheel moves the whole scene closer and further away.

_bm34

Select Mode   The Rectangle Cursor allows you to select multiple faces and vertices by dragging a selection rectangle (‘Marquee’) with the left mouse button.  Faces that lie wholly or partly within the rectangle are selected, optionally including any hidden faces.

_bm35

Hand Mode   With the Pointing Hand Cursor you can move selections directly with the mouse.  Left click on a face or vertex to select it - then drag it with the left button held down.  Use the scroll wheel to move the selection in the third dimension.  You can also move components, groups, or the whole object.  Faces surrounding the selection may be deformed.

_bm36

Pliers Mode   The Pliers Cursor is used to extrude faces, or simultaneously move vertices of equal radius in a radial direction.  To extrude a face (or group of faces) left click on it to select it, and then drag a ‘prism’ away from the face.   Select a vertex and all vertices of equal radius will move in sympathy away from, or towards, the origin.

_bm37

Rotate Mode   In Rotate Mode, selected faces, groups or whole objects can be rotated about the origin with the left mouse button, or with the arrow and plus/minus keys. Only the selected faces are rotated.  The amount of rotation in degrees is displayed in the Status Bar.

_bm38

Plane Mode   In Plane Mode you can choose a plane that will then constrain all movements to parallel the plane.  Double left-click on any face to define the plane of movement.  The face turns pink.

Build group selections in normal mode before switching to a special mode.  In all special modes other than Select Mode you can left-click on a completed group selection to move, extrude or rotate it (L3DD version 3.42 onwards).  Although it is possible select a group of faces in most special modes, you run the risk of moving faces while building the selection.

In Hand Mode the mouse-controlled movement of selections is largely intuitive, if somewhat imprecise.  If the mouse is moved right the selection moves right.  In the Settings Menu, however, there is an option called 3D Move Mode that makes the movements absolute with respect to the X, Y and Z axes.  Regardless of the orientation of the object on the screen, if the mouse is moved right the selection is moved to higher X values, etc.  This mode also applies to the arrow keys.
