This command sets Snap Mode (also known as Snap-to-Grid Mode) on or off. The leftmost panel in the Status Bar displays the current state --- ‘Snap On’ or ‘Snap Off’. A check mark appears next to the menu item when Snap Mode is on.
When Snap Mode is on, vertices ‘snap’ to the nearest snap-grid intervals when they are created or moved. The coordinates of new vertices are rounded up or down according to the current snap interval. The default snap interval is one 3D unit, but this can be changed via the Scale Dialog Box.
Snap mode is best used on objects like the house, where coordinates are supposed to round to the nearest, millimeter, centimeter, inch, foot etc. It should not be used on objects with rotational or spherical symmetry --- otherwise their symmetry will be corrupted. This might not be immediately apparent, but it will adversely affect any further symmetrical manipulation of the object down the track. You will no longer be able to move all rotationally related vertices in a coordinated fashion.
