This Closest-Point Vertex command creates a new vertex on a selected plane that is closest to a selected vertex lying outside the plane. Before using this command you must first select a face (representing the conceptual plane extending indefinitely in all directions) and a vertex. The new vertex is created on the plane, but can be outside the bounding edges of the selected face. If you draw a line from the selected vertex to the new vertex it is perpendicular to the selected face.
In the above illustration the yellow vertex has been created on the face of the pyramid at the point closest to the vertex lying outside the pyramid. By definition, the line joining the two vertices is perpendicular to the face containing the ‘closest-point vertex’.
